Launching Point

Check out our own Sundance Ski Team member getting some love from Surface after the jump. Dillon is a mini celebrity with the Surface/Causwell/Joystick crew and will have many opportunities with them.  This is what makes Surface soo cool and why we support them. Stay tuned to see what this kid does in the coming years.

CrossFit Games

Head over to the CrossFit Games website to check out the competition. These athletes are competing to become the fittest athlete in the world, which is a pretty big deal. Throw away all of your conceptions about working out and getting in shape, this is completely different than P90X and Zumba Dance and Insanity, Tae-bo, Pilates, Yoga, bodybuilding and everything else out there. Instead of steroids, just do CrossFit. All the benefits, none of the negatives.

The CrosFit games started in 2007 with about 750 participants. Now in 2011, there are over 25,000. Pretty cool.

What's even cooler is that 6 of our team members do CrossFit and are out working you. Come try it out!

Do

"We shall never have more time. We have, and have always had, all the time there is. No object is served in waiting until next week or even until to-morrow. Keep going day in and out. Concentrate on something useful. Having decided to achieve a task, achieve it at all costs."
- Arnold Bennett

Sheep are...

Hi there, I'm Logic, pleased to meet you.

Just because someone says something is the best, does not mean that that something is the best. Just because a group of people say something is the best, does not mean it is the best. Just because you keep hearing that something is the best, does not mean, you get the picture.

How many times have you been let down after waiting so long to get something that was supposedly going to make you a better skier, runner, biker, or anything? How many times have you hidden the fact that that something did nothing for you in a spout of hyperbole and enthusiasm, caught up in the wave of excitement that surrounded that something? How long did you go forcing yourself to endure that something?

If it works for you, use it and make it better. If it fits you, get it. If you need some direction on where to start, ask someone you trust, and then do your homework. Don't follow the herd. Often times, they'll lead you off a cliff into lava. A lava pit of painful feet and crappy turns.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about here? Full Tilt boots. They did not work for me. It's a 40 year old design that went away with one piece neon suits. Why did they bring it back? To torture my feet for 3 years and make me ski like a ghoombah. That's why.

Thanks logic, my feet are happy now. Oh, and thanks Nordica for making a sick boot and hooking me up with a pair.

Hami's and Glutes

Skiing at high levels takes a tremendous amount of effort. Makin' moves like Ligety, Vonn, Miller, Morrison, or Sage require amazing strength and power (P=Work/Time, or a lot of work in a short time).

Do you have it? What are you doing about it if you don't? Is it working?

Jay-birds have big mouths

Do you have a dream? How bad do you want it to become reality? There are so many ways to go about achieving your goals, and the only way to figure out what is going to work for you is to try it. If it doesn't work, change it. If it works, make it better. There's a lot of work involved, but when you feel the changes, remember what you did and recreate that every time. I'm talking about hard work, dedication, and commitment. If you need to go all Bill Nye the Science Guy on it, do it! No matter what, it's gotta be done 100 percent. No one's going to do it for you.

Jay-Z probably says it the best when he's describing Michael Jordan's extraordinary 'talent,'

“The gift that Jordan had wasn’t just that he was willing to do the work, but he loved doing it, because he could feel himself getting stronger, ready for anything.”

Jordan says the same thing in the commercial below, which is waaay better than that other self centered, spoiled brat's commercial. Just sayin'.

So, where will your highlight reel start? Do you love what you do enough to work every single day at it? Skiing, soccer, football, skating, arts, academics, or whatever it may be can only be done for a fraction of your day, week, month, year, life. What are you going to do in-between?

Pain

Pain is something you don't hear many professional athletes talk about too much. It's not fun to think about, and much less fun to experience, but if you want to be an athlete, you're going to experience pain. Here's a good synopsis of pain and it's various forms. Please read it and be able to recognize the different types so that you may be better prepared when you experience it. Studies show that pain tolerance correlates directly to competitiveness and athletic performance. Don't be scared though, most pain felt through sports is very temporary and the majority of it is positive pain, which means that it's beneficial to your growth as an athlete.

Blog Pic

We need a new blog header pic. Although being quite artsy, it's a little too dark and not happy enough. I like happy.

Send me what you got that's relevant to the team and I'll choose the winner. That lucky person get's a pair of Scott poles.

Nutrition x's Tres

What does a healthy meal look like? Not like that, der!

Look at your plate, make a fist, eat that much meat every meal; turn your hand over and fill it with nuts and seeds, eat that much good fat, fill the rest of your plate with stuff you found in the fruit and vegetable aisle. Fill your plate this way at every meal, don't eat more.

Easy right? Times up, yes it is.

Have you ever noticed how crappy you feel after eating junk? And it's literally junk. Hamburger buns are made of flower. Ever tried eating plain flower? You're body treats it like poison. We just mix it with a bunch of other poison until it fools our system into thinking it's food.

Dryland Games

Neat-O Gang!

The Games were a major success. The overall winner didn't work out, but the winner in each age group sure got a bag full of goodies. Everyone worked hard and gave it their best effort. Next year will be a lot better so get on an exercise program and stick to it. And what better way to do so than with your coach Tyson? I can fit in almost any schedule so just give me a call. You'll see major increases in endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy.

Also, a huge thank you to the event sponsors: Surface Skis, Scott USA, Nordica, Obermeyer, and Skullcandy! Support those who support us.

Talent Theories

Get your hustle up!

Many believe there is no such thing as a 'talented' athlete, in the truest sense of the word that is. If you believe in talent or not, one thing is for sure: hard work is the independent variable most commonly associated with success. In other words, hard work coupled with taking advantage of opportunities will beat out talent 99 percent of the time. Don't get discouraged by young athletes that got hot when they were young, many get lazy because of it. The ones that truly succeed in the long run, are those that have the desire to match their opportunities.

Know what you want, work to get where you want, create opportunities and take advantage of them. Stay on your grind, trust your hustle, don't get outworked, chip away at your goals and you'll get there.
